Il Past continuous si usa per descrivere un'azione che si è svolta per un periodo di tempo continuativo nel passato.

AFFERMATIVA

She was listening to the radio.

INTERROGATIVA

Was she listening to the radio?

NEGATIVA

She was not (wasn't) listening to the radio.

Past continuous Quando si usa - 1

Per esprimere azioni che sono iniziate prima e sono continuate dopo un momento preciso nel passato: Last night at 10 o'clock I was reading a book. ⇩ Stava succedendo in quel momento. 12 9 3 6

Past continuous Quando si usa - 2

Per parlare di un'azione o di un'attività in corso nel passato, che viene interrotta da un'altra azione: While I was studying, I heard a loud noise upstairs ⇩ Ha sentito il rumore durante l'azione descritta con il Past continuous.

Past continuous Quando si usa - 3

Per parlare di due azioni che hanno avuto luogo contemporaneamente nel passato: While I was working in the house the children were outside playing. ⇩ Le due azioni accadevano nello stesso momento.

Past continuous Altri usi

Il Past continuous si usa anche: Nelle descrizioni, specialmente dell'ambiente: It was a fine day. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. The children were playing Per descrivere come erano vestite le persone: She was wearing black sun glasses and a scarf.
